Fall Is Here: How Acupuncture Can Help You Stay Ahead of Seasonal Changes 🍂

The temperatures are finally starting to cool down, the days are getting a little shorter, and fall is making its way to Arizona. After a long summer, many of us are more than ready for cooler mornings, open windows, and spending a little more time outside.

But a change in seasons can also bring changes in how we feel.

As fall moves toward winter, some people notice more muscle and joint stiffness, changes in sleep, increased stress, headaches and tension, or those familiar seasonal sinus and allergy symptoms. And with cold and flu season approaching and the holidays right around the corner, this is a great time to pay a little extra attention to your overall wellness.

Acupuncture can be a wonderful addition to your fall self-care routine.

Cooler Weather Can Bring More Aches and Stiffness

Have you ever noticed that an old injury or achy joint seems to remind you it is there when the weather changes?

For people who already experience chronic pain, arthritis, back pain, neck and shoulder tension, or muscle stiffness, cooler temperatures and changes in activity can sometimes make those symptoms feel more noticeable.

Acupuncture is commonly used as part of a treatment plan for pain and musculoskeletal concerns. Depending on your individual needs, your acupuncturist may also incorporate therapies such as cupping or gua sha.

Rather than waiting until discomfort is interfering with your daily activities, fall can be a good time to get ahead of those recurring aches and pains.

Busy Schedules Can Mean More Stress—and Less Sleep

Fall seems to have a way of speeding everything up.

Summer vacations are over, school is back in session, schedules become busier, and before we know it, we are heading straight into the holiday season.

All of that activity can take a toll. You may notice you are having a harder time winding down at night, waking up feeling less rested, carrying more tension in your shoulders, or simply feeling like your brain never quite shuts off.

Acupuncture appointments also provide something many of us do not get enough of: dedicated time to slow down.

Many patients find their treatments relaxing and enjoy having that quiet time built into their routine. Taking care of yourself before your stress level reaches its peak can make self-care feel much more manageable.

Headaches and Tension May Start Creeping In

Stress, long hours at a computer, busy schedules, changes in sleep, and muscle tension can all contribute to headaches and that familiar tight feeling across the neck and shoulders.

If you find yourself rubbing your temples or stretching your neck more often lately, do not ignore what your body is telling you.

Your acupuncturist can talk with you about the type of headaches or tension you are experiencing, look at patterns and possible triggers, and develop a treatment plan based on your individual needs.

Do Not Forget About Fall Allergies and Sinus Complaints

We may not have leaves changing everywhere in Southern Arizona, but we certainly have our own version of allergy season!

Changes in weather, pollen, dust, wind, and our dry desert air can leave some people dealing with congestion, sinus pressure, headaches, sneezing, or irritated eyes.

Acupuncture is sometimes used as a complementary approach for people experiencing seasonal allergy and sinus symptoms. Your acupuncturist can discuss what you are experiencing and whether acupuncture may be an appropriate addition to your usual care.

Heading Into Cold and Flu Season

Fall is also a good reminder to get back to the basics of taking care of yourself.

Acupuncture is not a substitute for medical care, vaccines, or treatment when you are sick, but your overall wellness routine matters. Getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, eating well, managing stress, moving your body, and making time to rest are all important as we head into cold and flu season.

Sometimes the hardest part is simply giving ourselves permission to make our own health a priority.

And remember: if you are actively sick, especially with a fever or contagious illness, give us a call before coming into the clinic. We are always happy to help you determine whether it is better to reschedule your appointment.

You Do Not Have to Wait Until Something Hurts

We often think about scheduling acupuncture when something is wrong, our back hurts, a headache will not go away, or our stress level is through the roof.

But self-care does not always have to start with a problem.

As we transition into a new season, take a moment to check in with yourself. How are you sleeping? How is your stress level? Are those shoulders creeping toward your ears again? Is an old injury starting to talk to you? Have you been so busy taking care of everyone else that you have forgotten to take care of yourself?

Sometimes those little signs are our body’s way of asking for a little attention.
